In 1898, Mary Ann Slack, together with her husband and seven children, arrived in the Mission district and settled on a homestead in Hatzic. Three years later, Mr. Slack died, leaving Mary Ann to raise her children on her own, a task to which she devoted herself for the next 30 years. She was recognized for her selfless attention to the needs of others and earned the sympathy of her community when one of her sons died in World War I.
