Knut Kandal was pastor of Gushen Lutheran Church in Matsqui from 1945-1955. Kandal was born in Breim, Nordfjord, Norway, and emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 19. Ordained in 1913, Rev. Kandal came to Canada and served at a number of churches in Saskatchewan, including Parkside, Admiral, Frontier and North Battleford. He then ministered in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

Rev. Kandal, accompanied his wife and three children, arrived to lead the Lutheran Church in Mission in 1945. A much-respected man, Kandal was active in the formation of the Ministerial Association of Mission and Abbotsford, and served as its first president.
