Why collect Oral Histories?
At Lifetime Learning we believe that one of our duties is to preserve Mission’s unique history. Traditional methods of history will place the records of Mission and its most prominent citizens into the history books. But does that tell the whole story? We collect stories from Missionites who remember raised sidewalks on Main Street, the original “swimming pool,” summer jobs at the King Beach factory, the businesses, the families, the community events and clubs. Oral Histories preserve the sights, the smells, the sounds of yesterday, and tell the story of creating the Mission we know today. We carefully transcribe the interviews and house them at the Mission Community Archives to be preserved for future generations and today’s researchers and our community.
Lifetime Learning’s Oral History Program owes its continued successes to the financial support of the District of Mission, and various funders including New Horizons for Seniors, Mission Foundation, VanCity and the volunteers who graciously donate their time and talents.
